Wen Fan was born and raised in China. She has worked as a newspaper art editor and a freelance illustrator of children's books before she was accepted to the China National Academy of Fine Arts, where she majored in ceramic art. After graduating from CNAFA in 1992, Wen taught design foundations and ceramic art in Hangzhou Art & Design School until her move to the United States. In 2007, Wen received her MFA degree in Ceramics from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
